I spent the weekend trying to take some pictures of Porsches at Road Atlanta.  NASA was running the Pot O' Gold Rush weekend.  Had a lot of fun.  Look for more soon!

SPEC-tacular racing




How exciting would it be to see the Gulf 917s turning wheels in anger on the same stretch of tarmac as a Martini 935, a Coca Cola 962, and a Sunoco 917-30?  It would likely be one of the most exciting races anyone has ever seen, if only for the historical significance that each of these cars represents.  The Cayman Interseries, presented by Napleton Porsche takes this concept to a more realistic level.  Boiled down to what is essentially a spec racing series, the Cayman Interseries allows only identically prepared Cayman S to compete in a semi-professional racing series wearing the liveries of some of the most iconic Porsche racing cars of all time.  Spec racing is often equated with boring and staid so-called performance cars, partly due to the popularity of spec-miata series being run throughout the country.  Luckily, the Cayman Interseries is more than that, whether it owes its success to the beauty of the cars involved, the memories of the cars that they invoke, the sounds they produce, or the tantalizingly close racing, no one can be certain.  One thing is for sure, the Cayman Interseries is the ultimate in spec racing.   

Napleton began the series in 2009, preparing several Cayman S models for Interseries duty.  Beginning with a stock example of Porsche’s mid-engined beauty, Napleton Racing then fits the requisite safety equipment, improves on the excellent suspension with adjustable remote reservoir shock absorbers and stiffer spring rates, the braking system is reworked with race grade components, and finally, power is increased, simply through use of a catalyst-back exhaust system, and a quick PCM flash.  The end result is staggering as the newly reborn Cayman looks and sounds as though it were built in Zuffenhausen alongside the GT3 R Cup in the factory Rennworken.  Weighing in at just three thousand pounds full of fluid, equipped with a full roll cage, and a heavy driver behind the wheel, the Cayman is a truly quick car, as it makes full use of 300 horsepower at the rear wheels.  The cars are capable of speeds around 162 miles per hour depending upon track configuration, and the engines rev to about 7400 RPM.

The cost of preparation on a Cayman Interseries racer is approximately 40,000 dollars over the cost of the Cayman S base car.  The list of what you get for your 40 grand is quite long, and after having read it, it seems like quite the bargain.  The car must be prepared by Napleton, where the PCM, Engine, Transmission and ports are sealed to avoid tampering.  Longevity is certainly nothing to worry about, as the cars run stock OEM internal running gear components.  Series Vice President Jack Baldwin claims that last year’s champion had over 7500 at-speed miles on his engine-chassis combination without any reworking.  Since the series started in 2009, only one car has had to have the engine replaced, though after sifting through the electronic data, the engine was proven to have spent nearly 3 and a half minutes in the “level five over rev” range which is defined as 9300 RPM and above.

Running an eight race series in 2011, the Interseries travels in conjunction with established SVRA and HSR vintage events.  Not only are the cars easily recognizable, and immediately competitive, they also are given the opportunity to shine on major national circuits such as Daytona, Mid Ohio, Road America and Watkins Glen.  The average competitor in the series may not become the next Mario Andretti, but they are certainly given the chance to race where legends race.  At the benefit of both participant and spectator, the Cayman Interseries is one of the most interesting spec series you can be a part of, and certainly the most pleasing to the eye.

Porsche at Daytona 2011



Porsche motorsport has earned quite a reputation for winning at the famed Daytona Motor Speedway.  The Rolex 24 at Daytona has been won overall by a Porsche an astounding 22 times.  The Porsche badge has been in victory lane at Daytona more than any other marque.  The 2011 running of the event has proven that Porsche is still aiming for victories, and certainly has the equipment and driver talent to do so.
The general consensus among racing fans is that Seth Neiman has built the Flying Lizard team to do one thing, and do it well. Win.  One of Porsche’s premier customer efforts, The Lizards have a legendary reputation for their ever present fastidiousness, focused personnel, and determined preparation. In the lead up to the Daytona 24 hour they treated it no differently, and even as a one-off, rookie effort, they proved to be the class of the field.
On the Thursday before the race, Joerg delicately placed the Porsche powered Riley at the top of the time sheets.  With a flying lap that easily eclipsed the previously held Daytona Prototype lap record at the track, Joerg commented that he didn’t take a single breath for the full one minute and 40 second lap.
                On race day, it looked like the Lizards had gotten their setup perfect yet again.  At three-thirty in the afternoon on Saturday, the green flag fell on the start of the 24 hour enduro.  Shortly thereafter, Bergmeister led the field, followed by 17 other Daytona Prototypes, and driving away as though he were still qualifying.  Stretching out an enormous gap over his first stint, everything was going according to plan.  They proved to be the quickest of the field, consistently lapping in the low 1 minute 40s, while most teams circulated the track in about 1 minute and 43 seconds.  The red and silver 45 managed to grab the fastest lap of the race with a 1 minute 40.417 second pace.  Joerg set the blisteringly quick time during one of his stints and, in race trim, was only three tenths of a second slower than his pole position winning lap, proving that the team had the package to beat. 
            Due to unfortunate circumstances, the Flying Lizard Porsche lost out in the end to Chip Ganassi’s team, who ended the race in first and second position.  Not of their own doing, the Lizard team was caught up in a two separate incidents within the first three hours that permanently affected their finishing position.  During an early restart, the field was bunched up and, caught unaware, Scott Tucker in the Level 5 Motorsport BMW Riley drove the front left corner into and through the right rear bodywork of the Lizard car.  In a second incident, the No. 81 GT class Ferrari fielded by DragonSpeed Motorsports spun into the path of oncoming cars, before rolling backward off the track.  Seth Neiman navigated the Lizard car off track to avoid contact with the Ferrari, and as he was easing his way back toward the racing surface, he struck a short mound of dirt head on with the front of the car.  The carbon composite splitter fitted to the front of the Riley chassis dug into the dirt.  Once back on the track, Seth found himself at a loss for downforce and grip as the splitter and the front undertray had separated from the chassis and the assembly was dragging on the ground.  Effecting repairs to the car to regain its race worthiness lost the team a total of 35 minutes in the garage, and 19 laps to the leaders.  What could, and should, have been a race for the overall win, was cut short twenty two hours in, when damage dealt in the first incident caused an oil line to burst. 
            Similarly, in the GT class, Porsche’s 911 GT3 Cup had the field covered, and qualified on pole with an additional 5 Porsches in the next 6 positions.  The pole time of 1 minute 48 seconds, again a track record, was earned by The Racer’s Group’s ever quick Andy Lally.  Misfortune was soon announced for Porsche as the pole time was disallowed due to technical infraction, citing that the rear wing was mounted one millimeter too far back on the chassis, and the car was relegated to the back of the grid.  Luckily, Porsche also had the second fastest time with Dominik Farnbacher, in another of TRG’s five entered cars, starting in the first slot.
            Porsche had a full 14 cars in the race, and made up nearly half of the 32 car GT field.  The deck may have been stacked in Porsche’s favor, but there was still 24 hours of race to run, and run it they did.  The quickest of TRG’s cars, driven by Andy Lally, Spencer Pumpelly, Wolf Henzler, NASCAR driver Brendan Gaughan, and Steve Bertheau, made its way from the back of the field to the front in 22 hours, and held the lead for the final two hours, winning by five laps from the Steve Miller racing Porsche GT3 Cup, making the Rolex a one-two finish for Porsche.
            TRG’s weekend was not without issue, however.  Just over 7 hours had passed when the No. 67 car developed an issue with clutch engagement, before completely losing the clutch altogether.  A decision was made that the car would go behind the wall to the garage for repairs, and the team went to work preparing tools, parts, and personnel in the garage area, waiting for the car to arrive.
            At the last minute, team owner Kevin Buckler made the decision of a lifetime.  Weighing his options, he came to the conclusion that bringing the car in to change the clutch would give them no chance of finishing in the lead.  If the drivers could change their driving style slightly to mitigate the damage to the transmission, shift without a clutch, and stay out of trouble, there was a small chance that they could salvage the race.  Buckler was of the mindset that TRG would either come away with a win, or throw the car in the scrap bin when the day was done.
            Thanks to the extreme talent of the drivers enlisted, they did exactly as they were asked.  Keeping the car out of trouble for over 17 hours without a clutch was paramount, as any spin or off track excursion would have ended in a stalled car with no chance of getting it moving again.  Every pit stop, the car had to be push started to get on its way again.  Pumpelly and Lally both agreed that the braking zone for turn one was a bit disconcerting while driving without a clutch, but they managed to persevere, and finish in the lead.  Winning the race, quite literally, came down to a split second decision.
            Call it a testament to Porsche’s engineering skill, their ability to attract winning drivers, or their sheer number of entrants, but even with a bit of difficulty, Porsche’s weekend at the high banks of Daytona was eventful, and even successful.  The track record in both DP and GT, pole position in both classes, fastest race lap in both classes, consistently quick laps in both classes, and a 1-2 finish in the GT class all have the Porsche name attributed to them.  The 49th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona was absolutely obliterated by Porsche’s determined drive for excellence.

The Le Manster



It has been nearly 13 years since Porsche last won the 24 hours of Le Mans.  The record 16th win overall was more an act of luck combined with preparation than of sheer outright speed.  Had it not been for several failures by the faster Toyotas, BMWs and Mercedes, Porsche might not have won on its 50th anniversary.  A large percentage of that preparation, along with a good bit of engineered-in reliability, can be attributed to the works of now-retired Porsche head racing engineer, Norbert Singer.
Not only was Mr. Singer indispensable in the development of the GT1-98 project, but it was his mind that helped develop the aerodynamic and mechanical advantages of the 917 and Carrera RSR programs, as well as the 934, 935, 924 Carrera GTR, 936, 956, and 962. Whether a personal preference or a corporate ideology, the vast majority of his projects with Porsche revolved around turbocharged engines, even when the opposition was using larger displacement naturally aspirated powerplants.  His prowess was not limited to sports cars though, as he also headed the development on Porsche’s Indy projects, as well as the TAG-Porsche Formula 1 engine program.  Singer also worked on several Porsche road going cars; these including the legendary 930, the 928, which was Porsche's most technologically advanced car at the time, the 924 Carrera GT, and the Carrera GT Supercar. The last was to be his final project before retirement, in which he shaped the supercar's aerodynamic structure.
Born in Germany in 1939, Singer graduated from the University of Munich with an engineering degree and promptly began working at Porsche.  As a junior engineer, his first task in 1969 was to develop a new cooling system for the transmissions in the 917 sports car.  Getting that task settled helped net Porsche their first two wins at the 24 Hours of LeMans in 1970 and 1971.
Following his success with the 917 projects, Singer was then tasked with developing a faster and more reliable racing version of the 911 road car chassis.  Starting with the Carrera RSR, and continuing development through the 934 and 935, Singer was responsible for many of the trophies placed upon Porsche’s mantle in the late seventies and early eighties.  Singer would eventually develop the 935 to such an extent that it, too, would win the French endurance classic at Le Mans.  Kicking off Porsche’s penchant for selling its racing cars to customer teams rather than running its own rennwerke, the 935 was one of the most successful customer programs that any manufacturer has ever entered into, bettered only by Porsche’s current 911 GT3 programs.
With victories in CART, Formula 1, and further victories in sports cars, Porsche owes much of its racing history and success to the work of a single man, Norbert Singer.  While it is certain that he could not have done what he did as a single entity, and that his success is the success of the team, who knows where Porsche would be without him.  As a company that touts itself as essentially born from racing, perhaps Porsche’s success as a road car company is, at least in part, owed to Singer as well.

On a sunny, Sunday afternoon in an unassuming house situated in a beautiful neighborhood in East Cobb, Jack Baldwin sits at his computer in his office discussing the intricacies of his lengthy career in North American motor racing.  With his two dogs reverting between lazily sleeping and excitedly begging for attention at knee height, we are the only ones in the house.  Surrounded by trophies, medallions, photographs, and memorabilia of his achievements, we discuss each at length.
                Jack began as a young, up-and-coming Floridian, with not much in his pockets.  Though one thing he did have was a never-dying dream to be paid to drive quickly.  He asserted his strengths with a win at all costs attitude, and a champion’s ability to think on his toes.  Starting out in Formula Ford, Jack became a national champion early in his career, and used this innate quickness to springboard his career into sportscar racing. 
                An acquaintance of Jack’s convinced him that the Atlanta area was where he needed to be if he wanted a career in motorsport.  Jack took this advice and scraped together what little he had and headed north to the road racing capital of the United States.  For several seasons Jack took what driving positions he could.  Calling anyone and everyone he could, trying to secure a drive, Jack rang through to Jim Downing’s Atlanta based sports car shop.  This call would change Jack’s future quite rapidly.
                Jim had recently sold his championship winning International Motor Sport Association (IMSA) GTU Mazda RX-7 to a man named Ira Young, and Jim had personally recommended Jack as the person Ira needed to hire to drive his new car.  Armed with this information, Jack immediately called Ira.  Ira committed to hiring Jack as his second driver for the 1984 season.  This decision proved to be a good one for both parties, as Jack now had a drive, and Ira had a winner.  The Mazda won on its first outing at the 24 hours at Daytona, cementing Jack’s place as lead driver on Ira’s team.  The team would win many more races, along with the series title in the GTU class in both 1984 and 1985.
                After winning the GTU title for cars “under” 2.5 liters, Jack moved up to the GTO class for cars with displacements over that limit.  Baldwin signed a contract with the Peerless team racing a Chevrolet Camaro in the GTO class with tobacco sponsorship.  Driving the car from the 1986 season through the end of 1989, they managed a podium here and there, but the opposition was tough.  The arrival of the Audi GTO Quattro’s proved too much for the aged chassis, and the car was retired.  Through this period, Jack also found himself in a Grand Touring Prototype every few weeks, when his schedule allowed, co-driving a Ford Probe GTP , and later a Corvette GTP with David Hobbs.
                For 1990, Jack decided that he was tired of driving for a tobacco sponsored team.  Because of the restrictions on tobacco advertising, their car was not even allowed to be shown in the race programs.  Jack worked to secure a more family friendly sponsor for his future racing endeavors.  Having raced with IMSA for over six seasons, Jack decided to switch over to the SCCA and their burgeoning Trans-American Challenge (Trans-Am) series.  Again using a Chevrolet Camaro as basis for his attack on the series, Jack lured Mattel die cast brand Hot Wheels to sponsor the car.
                The Hot Wheels Camaro was a smash success, both on the track, and commercially.  Jack was awarded with the Trans Am series Rookie of the Year trophy in 1990.  The championship came later, in the 1992 season.  Driving his Hot Wheels Camaro to victory lane was hard fought, with competition from Tommy Kendall, Scott Sharp, and Scott Pruett.  This championship assisted with turning the die cast version of the car into the highest selling Mattel product of all time.
                In 1993 and 1994, Jack received successive invitations to North American Motorsport’s highest honor at the time, the International race of Champions.  Facing completion from the likes of Brabham, Earnhardt, Petty, Jarrett, and Fangio, Jack raced around the banking, drafting his way to a handful of podium finishes.  Through the nineties, Jack continued to drive in the Trans Am series in several of General Motors best products, and won the 12 hours of Sebring in 1997 with Oldsmobile, also sponsored by Hot Wheels. 
                Starting off the early 2000’s with a pair of overall victories in the Grand Am Rolex Sports Racer category got Jack back in the winner’s circle.  This time, Jack was in an open cockpit prototype.  Baldwin drove the Robinson Racing Judd V8 powered Riley and Scott Mk. III with George Robinson. 
                To this day, Jack continues a busy regimen.  For the last seven years, Jack has found himself driving in the 24 hours of Daytona.  Now, he predominately drives Porsches on track, as he is VP of the Cayman Interseries, and a driving instructor for Porsche enthusiasts.  A tight relationship with Napleton Porsche has allowed him to continue driving quickly.

Porsche and Facebook

The Porsche museum in Stuttgart now has one of its cars in the traditional Facebook blue and white.  The 911 GT3 R Hybrid racing car is now posted in the middle of the museum for all to view, however it has changed from the orange and silver Porsche Intelligent Performance paintwork that it has been seen in for the last year.  Having run at the 24 hours of the Nurburgring, and nearly winning overall, as well as last year’s Petit Le Mans, the hybrid has several miles of testing under its belt.

Why does this premier hybrid have Facebook pasted on its doors?  Porsche is saying thank you for all of the online support.  Porsche recently hit a milestone of one million “fans” on the social networking site, and as such, has put every one of their fan’s names on the car in vinyl. If you were one of the first million, you can look for your name on Porsche’s Facebook car mini-site.

Lizards at Daytona

The general consensus among racing fans is that Seth Neiman has built the Flying Lizard team to do one thing, and do it well. Win.  The Lizards have a legendary reputation for their ever present fastidiousness, focused personnel, and determined preparation. In the lead up to the Daytona 24 hour they acted no differently, and even as a one-off, rookie effort, they proved to be the class of the field.
The cars are always turned out professionally and to the absolute extent of the rules, leaving nothing on the table.  In an era of motor racing predominately decided by performance balancing, restrictor sizes, and weight minimums, those behind the team persevere and overcome, winning regardless of the circumstances.  The drivers stand as a multinational who’s who of endurance sports car racing, staffed with Porsche senior team factory drivers. Bergmeister, Long, Van Overbeek and Neiman are absolutely unparalleled in their collection of victories, the Lizard drivers aim for nothing less than the top step of the podium.  The remainder of the team is just as important, and they share a similar mantra. They say endurance races are won and lost in the pits, and that adage is held dear by the red & silver team. Always ready, ever vigilant, the team waits for misfortune to strike.
            The Rolex 24 at Daytona stands as one of international sports car racing’s great events.  Counted by drivers and teams alike, The Rolex stands among similarly epic events; the 24 hours of Le Mans, the 12 hours of Sebring, and Road Atlanta’s Petit Le Mans, as one of the top events to win.  This year’s event was no different, drawing talent from NASCAR, Formula 1, IndyCar to compete for the trophy and a Rolex Daytona wristwatch. 
            This year, at the 49th running of the 24 hour, Flying Lizard came prepared for a fight.  Defending champions, Action Express Racing, and perennial favorites, Ganassi Racing, each brought two cars, while the Sonoma, California based team concentrated their efforts into a single car.  While Action Express fielded their cars with Riley Chassis Technologies bases, the same chassis used by Flying Lizard, their Porsche power plant was different than the one in the Lizard car.  Since their debut last year, Action Express has chosen to use a Porsche 5.0 liter V8 prepared by the Lozano brothers in Texas, as opposed to the Porsche factory prepared 4 liter flat six RSR engine.  By using the smaller standard Porsche engine, Flying Lizard was allowed to use an additional forward gear, totaling 6 gears, and they were given a fifty pound weight advantage.  Also, the flat six awarded them factory support, and afforded them a bit of familiarity in a new venue, as the 4 liter engine is nearly identical to the one located at the back of their ALMS GT2 class 911 GT3 RSR.
            In the pre-season test, dubbed the Roar Before the 24, their hand may not have been displayed for all to see.  Preferring to hold their cards close to their chest, Flying Lizard posted times consistently in the top ten.  All of the team drivers expressed optimism for the race, excitement at the possibilities, and most of all, improvement in the car during each of the sessions.  Joerg Bergmeister said “We had a good three days, and saw the car get better and better in each session.”, while Pat Long commented that he was “pleased with the progress that we made over the weekend”.

            Quickly jumping from the car, Bergmeister handed over the leading car to his familiar teammate Patrick Long.  The German and Californian have been sharing cars, and championships, for several years, and their driver changes have become almost an act of art, even though Bergmeister stands a full head above Long.  After the cycle of pit stops was completed, Long found himself with a healthy lead over the field yet again, and continued to stretch it.  During the first caution of the race, Long brought the car to pit lane for a top up on fuel.  Even though this move dropped them to the middle of the pack, being out of sync with other teams on pit cycles provides many benefits, and the team wanted to take full advantage.  By the time Long returned to the pits at the end of his extended stint, he had climbed his way back to second place overall.
            Another caution at the start of the second hour, brought an end to Long’s time in the car, as he handed the car to team Principal Seth Neiman.  Starting his stint under caution, Neiman was down a few cars from the lead.  As the green flag flew again, restarting the race, Seth was bunched up slightly in traffic as the leader dropped back from the pace car.  The mistiming of the start caused a chain reaction, and caught unawares, Scott Tucker in the Level 5 Motorsport BMW Riley drove the front left corner into and through the right rear bodywork of the Lizard car.  Another pit stop was necessary to replace the right rear tire, and mend some of the damaged bodywork. 
            Later in his stint, Seth ran into further problems.  Coming off of the banking, and through turn one, everything was looking great.  As Neiman rounded turn two and headed toward the international horseshoe, there was a haze hanging low in the air, and the silhouette of a car moving perpendicularly across the track surface.  A second car had already taken avoidance maneuvers across the grass, kicking up dirt in the process.  The first car, the No. 81 GT class Ferrari fielded by DragonSpeed Motorsports had come off of the banking, taken just a bit too much of the curbing at the exit of turn two, and spun into the path of oncoming cars, before rolling backward off the track.  The second car is identified as the No. 66 TRG Porsche, which, in avoidance took to the grass, and consequently suffered a puncture.  Neiman also chose to go off the track to his right, as the Ferrari was rolling to his left.  He made it safely past the DragonSpeed car, but then disaster struck. 
As Seth navigated the car back toward the ribbon of black pavement, he struck a short mound of dirt, head on with the front of the car.  The carbon composite splitter fitted to the front of the Riley chassis dug into the dirt as though it were mining gold.  Once back on the track, Seth found himself at a loss for downforce and grip as the splitter and the front undertray had separated from the chassis and the assembly was dragging on the ground.  Continuing onward at a much reduced pace for the remainder of the lap, Neiman negotiated the car back to the garage for immediate repair. 
Using the foresight of an experienced team, crew members swarmed both ends of the car, with one group repairing the damage, while a second group replaced the rear brake pads, which would likely need to be replaced later in the race anyway, saving them valuable time in the pits.  The chassis is designed in a way that the entire front section of the car, including all of the areas which had received damage in the incident, should be able to be replaced in around ten minutes.  Unfortunately for the team, one of the fasteners for the front splitter had also been damaged in the incident, and more extensive repairs to the chassis were required to properly repair the car for safe competition, and to prevent future failures over the remaining 21 hours.  During the 35 minutes the team needed to effect repairs, the No. 45 Porsche fell 19 laps behind the leader.
The team then set off in an attempt at regaining the time that they had lost in the garage.  With 20 hours left in the race, it was not impossible, though without a large handful of luck, seemed improbable.  Van Overbeek headed out first after the repairs, and by the end of his stint, had gotten the team up to 16th position.  Bergmeister took the wheel for the second time just as the 4th hour came to a close, and managed to gain another position.
Four hours passed, uneventfully, with three laps gained back on the leaders.  The down but not out attitude of the lizards, and never say die mentality was working, as they proved to be the quickest of the field, consistently lapping in the low 1 minute 40s, while most teams circulated the track in about 1 minute and 43 seconds.  The red and silver 45 managed to grab the fastest lap of the race with a 1 minute 40.417 second pace.  Joerg Bergmeister set the blisteringly quick time during one of his stints, and in race trim, was only three tenths of a second slower than his pole position winning lap, proving that the team had the package to beat.  The car was then classified in the 13th position only 16 laps behind first position.
By the halfway point of the race, they had gained another position back, now identified on the time sheets as 12th.  Bergmeister provided a double stint, affording the team a quick pitstop that was desperately needed.  Long then got back in for the third time, and again, the team continued chipping away at the deficit.    
As the sun rose over the Daytona International Speedway, the sky remained relatively darkened by a low hanging fog as thick as cake icing.  The fog had been recognized as a danger to the competitors, and the safety car had been released just before sun up.  The drivers, and fans alike, will attest to the threat that was posed by the fogged air.  Distance of view could be measured in feet rather than miles, and some said, at speed it was difficult to see beyond the hood of your own car.  What most thought would be a quick caution period turned into a lengthy affair, with the green flag not shown again until eight o’clock in the morning, ending 2 hours and 49 minutes of yellow flags being shown.  
            Twenty two hours twenty four minutes and fifty four seconds into the race, the team would get a definitive answer as to where they would finish.  While negotiating the international horseshoe, and headed toward the kink, Bergmeister felt a sudden loss of power to the wheels, and with a flash, flames appeared from just behind the right rear wheel.  Bergmeister, thanks to his quick thinking and professional action, pulled the car off the track just in front of a fire marshal station, and extricated himself from the vehicle before any harm could be done, being sure to park the car on paved surface as opposed to the dry and flammable grass.
            The premature end to the race seemed to stem from the damage dealt by the initial contact from behind at the earlier restart.  An oil line rupture was reported to be the cause of the fire, while the loss of forward motion has not been attributed to any one component failure, though it seems it must be related.
            Pole position and fastest lap of the race are attributed to the team, and without the early trip to the garage, they certainly would have been running away with the win.  It is a godsend, then, that the failure and fire occurred when the team was 12 laps down, as opposed to being 12 seconds up on second place.  No time is a failure more painful than when you know unequivocally that you could have won the race otherwise. When probed, a member of the team stated that this was his mindset, and he was attempting to convey this to the rest of the group.  Bad luck early helped to ease them into the retirement from the race.
            The fire in the car is only matched by the fire that has been lit inside the team.  What was begun as a one off event with the only logical outcome being victory, has now turned into a burning desire to come back with an even greater desire to win, and an even higher level of preparation.  Though they may have fallen flat in 2011, the Lizards will be determined to fly in 2012.  Flying Lizard has unfinished business at the storied high banks of Daytona.

The ACO has released the entry list for the 2011 24 hours of Le Mans

The ACO released the entry list for the 24 hours of Le Mans today.  Porsche has discontinued factory support of the RS Spyder prototype, and as such, there will be no Porsche prototypes in LMP2 for 2011.  The GT competition rules have been slightly reworked this year, as GT1 has been disbanded and the former GT2 class will now be known as GTE, now broken into Professional and Amateur. 

Porsche has representation by six teams, entering eight 911 GT3 RSRs in the French endurance classic.  Brandishing the crest of the Zuffenhausen brand, four teams have entered GTE Pro; Prospeed Competition, IMSA Performance Matmut, American team Flying Lizard Motorsports, and Team Felbermayr-Proton who are fielding two cars.  The Amateur ranks are filled by entries from Proton Competition, Larbre Competition, and a second car from Flying Lizard.  Three of the GTE class reserve ranks are also GT3 models, including a second car from Prospeed, along with one each from Tolmit Arabia, and BMS Scuderia Italia.
